The Good & the Bad - what did you like best? What least?
I have just spent three weeks at GLS and I can most definitely say that it is a pretty impressive establishment.
I stayed on campus and the room was very impressive and big for just one person. The cleaning service was very impressive – 2 times a week (Weds and Sat). The room was warm, cosy and in a great location seconds from class and the cafeteria.
The food was good, I had breakfast nearly every day apart from one day when we went for brunch out (A German MUST!). The lunch food was quite expensive for what it was and I only went there a few times so can’t really comment on all the dishes they had available.
The lessons
What can I say – the teachers I had were really engaging and fun to be around. I am still at A1.1 level but I can now communicate in German at a very basic level and understand a bit what people say in public – something that I was not able to do three weeks ago. I especially like the style of teaching –we had one teacher who gave us lots of different examples to remember how verbs were structured in sentences etc. There was one teacher who I found slightly confusing as she kept speaking in German (which they do in class) but as we were all beginners it was very difficult to try and understand what she said when she did not give you a word or two in English. I am definitely going to continue to learn German thanks to GLS.
The activities
All great – we went to Leipzig which was an interesting city historically and culturally in the former East Germany. A place I wouldn’t have gone there if it hadn’t been with the school. Christmas Markets were fantastic and we went to quite a few both with the school and independently. Lovely Marta at the library is very helpful with explaining places to go as is Birget who gave book suggestions etc.
Over all
Book your place there now. I hope to go again and stay for longer. I was lucky and had a fantastic group of people in my classes which helped massively. I may look to come back in the summer as I am sure it is even more of a fun place when the sun is out – although Berlin in the snow is pretty magical. I will also no doubt go with a family or in an apartment not on campus next time to get a more independent stay of Berlin, but an apartment on campus worked great. Thank you GLS, you’ve got me interested in German which I never thought possible! Dankoshon!
